Formula 1600 | Ensor-Smith Claims Runner-Up Finish at Wild East London Round

KC Ensor-Smith maintained his strong form in the Investchem Formula 1600 Championship by securing another victory and a fourth place to add to his championship tally. The three-time national karting champion, competing in his second circuit racing season, entered the East London round with a six-point lead in the championship, but a Race 2 incident saw his championship rival close the gap slightly.

Having won the last two races in Gqeberha, Ensor-Smith was in good form and hoping to continue his winning streak to extend his lead in the championship and move a step closer to championship honours. His weekend started positively after the Witbank teenager took the opening race win from his championship rival despite starting from second on the grid.

However, the second race saw the two championship rivals collide, sending Ensor-Smith into a spin and off the circuit, fortunately avoiding competitors. Able to rejoin the race in eighth, he caught and passed several drivers on his way to record the fastest lap of the race and cross the finish line in fourth in what has been one of the most impressive comebacks in recent years.

"While disappointed in the outcome of the final race, we showed our pace today. We know it will always be close racing, as it has been throughout the season, and the championship will likely go down to the last rounds. With two rounds remaining, we need to keep the pressure on. As usual, the team did a stellar job, and I can't thank them enough," said Ensor-Smith.

While the championship takes a short break, Round 6 will return to the Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town on 20-21 September.
