KARTING | Antunes Battles to a Top-Eight Red Star Finish

The Mini ROK class once again served up three exciting heats at South Africa's newest circuit at Red Star Raceway just outside of Delmas, Mpumalanga. Diego Antunes finished a solid eighth overall in a 17-kart field, making up part of the third round of the Northern Regions ROK Kart Championships.

Besides the demanding racing, Diego also had to learn the newly constructed circuit. It connects with the main circuit and features fast sweeping bends before entering a slower, more technical section.

After qualifying in tenth on Saturday morning, the TrevPar World-backed driver improved to finish just outside the top five in sixth during the opening heat. Heat 2 would be hard-fought, with the NBR Racing driver having to make up a few lost positions. After dropping to 12th, the former Northern Regions Bambino Champion would record another top-ten finish, taking the chequered flag in ninth. The final heat would see his best performance of the weekend. After making his way up from 11th, Diego would battle it out for fifth position before dropping to the back of the three-kart train to finish in seventh.

"I really enjoy the new circuit," said Diego. "It offers many challenges, and a small mistake can be costly, especially in Mini ROK. We didn't quite have the pace of the leaders and had to battle for the off-podium places, but I am grateful to the team for the effort they put in. We'll be back here soon and I hope to have a little more pace."

Round 4 of the regional competition will resume on September 7th, following the final round of the National ROK Cup South Africa Championships, which will take place on August 23-24 at Red Star Raceway.
