V8 SUPERCARS | Fameliaris Takes Wet Killarney Victory

In the weekend's only Mobil 1 V8 Supercars race, Julian Fameliaris, the reigning Mobil 1 V8 Supercars Champion, extended his 2024 championship lead by winning at the Killarney International Raceway. Unfortunately, due to weather and fading light, category representatives called the final race off as the championship competed at the Regional Extreme Festival.

Fameliaris claimed his first pole position at the Western Cape circuit on Saturday morning in dry conditions. However, the conditions changed as the combined field of Mobil 1 V8 Supercars and Killarney-based V8 Masters took to the circuit for Race 1.

Several cars locked up under braking on slicks and spun off at Turn 1 with a light drizzle, making conditions tricky. Famerliaris, too, locked up but kept it on the circuit to head into the lead. An incident between two V8 Masters competitors saw the race halted with a red flag. The race, which was restarted later in the day, would be in the wet with drivers out on wet weather tyres.

After a cautious start, Fameliaris edged out a significant lead over the field, lapping at times up to seven seconds faster than his closest rivals to take his maiden victory at Killarney International Raceway by just over 43 seconds.

"It was a tricky day out on track," said Fameliaris. "We started on slicks earlier today, and before we got the green light, it started drizzling, which made the car really challenging to handle. I can't say I'm surprised that we ended up with a red flag situation. Having restarted on wets, it went a little better despite it still being slippery, but I found a nice line and rhythm and was able to keep a good pace. Some more points in the bag and my first win here, so I'm pretty happy. Great job by the team as usual."

Fameliaris will be back in action on 13-14 September 2024 at Zwartkops Raceway.
