V8 SUPERCARS | Fameliaris Extends Championship Lead After Double Zwartkops Victory

It was another successful outing for Julian Fameliaris at Zwartkops Raceway. The driver of Greek descent continued to show consistent form in the 2024 Mobil 1 V8 Supercars season, recording two GT1 class victories on Saturday. This helped him in his bid to retain his 2023 title.

After claiming pole on Saturday morning, the Lube-Net Chevrolet Corvette driver recorded a comfortable victory in Race 1. With a solid opening lap, Fameliaris demonstrated his skill and determination by maintaining the lead of the 10-lap race to claim another 2024 victory.

The inverted grid second race saw the Johannesburg resident start from fourth. In an exciting race, Fameliaris soon made a pass on Warren Lombard for third before setting off after the two competitors ahead. Getting a better drive out of Turn 2, Fameliaris had the run on Thomas Reib and made the pass for second with only Terry Wilford (Class X) still ahead. Wilford was, however, quicker in the latter stages of the race, leaving Fameliaris to settle for second on track but again victorious in the main GT1 class.

"It was quite the day," commented Fameliaris after Race 2. "I always knew we could do well as we've had some solid results here of late. Starting from pole in Race 1 made it somewhat easier as there was some clear road ahead and less dirt and cement dust hindering my visibility. Race 2 was completely different in that I started behind a few cars and had to be patient in the opening laps. Once I passed Warren I was able to hunt down Thomas. Terry was a little more difficult to catch and I decided to settle for the class victory and the points. Thanks to everyone for their support, especially the lads from Gavin Walkins Racing, Di Matteo Racing and my backers Lube-Net, OMP and Probrokers."

Round 7 of the championship resumes on 11-12 October at Red Star Raceway.
