KARTING | Cadet De Wet Dominates FK

The opening round of the MSA Northern Regions Karting Championship saw the introduction of the Cadet class (formerly Bambino), where 2022 Bambino rookie Luhan De Wet dominated the day’s proceedings at a rain-affected Formula-K Kart Circuit, Benoni.

De Wet, who was expected to dictate the pace, having gained significant experience during his debut 2022 season, started the day out-qualifying the field. From there, he did everything right: hitting the apexes, finding the fastest line and using the event as preparation for the upcoming Rotax-promoted national Bambino round at the iDube Raceway, Camperdown, KZN.

Starting from pole position for every one of the three heats, De Wet, a pupil of Louis Leipodlt Primary in Centurion, opened up a significant lead over the rest to win Heat 1 by more than 30 seconds, Heat 2 by more than 20 seconds and the final heat by over 37 seconds. All three heats offered various levels of grip, with the second heat contended in the rain. As a result, De Wet claimed the overall winner’s trophy on the day.

“Today was really about preparation for us and supporting the class,” said Sharl de Wet, Luhan’s father. “Yes, we were the fastest out there in all conditions, but that was to be expected. We were able to try a few different things but made sure that Luhan did the basics correctly. Today’s field consisted of rookies and inexperienced drivers, and I think they all did well in these conditions. We will now focus our attention on the upcoming iDube national.”

De Wet will return to the track on 3-4 March as the national opening round of the MSA South African Kart Championships commences at the iDube Raceway, Camperdown, KZN.
